Developing Confident Communicators

At New Road, we place a strong emphasis on oracy, recognising that the ability to communicate effectively is fundamental to success in education and beyond. Through purposeful talk, discussion, debate and presentation opportunities, pupils develop the confidence to express their ideas clearly, listen actively to others and engage thoughtfully with different viewpoints.

Oracy Across the Curriculum

Oracy is embedded throughout our curriculum and forms an important part of everyday learning. From collaborative group work and partner discussions to formal presentations and classroom debates, pupils are encouraged to articulate their thinking, justify their opinions and build on the contributions of their peers. These experiences help deepen understanding and strengthen critical thinking skills.

Building Skills for Life

We believe that strong speaking and listening skills are essential life skills. By developing oracy, we equip pupils with the confidence and communication abilities needed for future study, employment and participation in society. Our pupils learn to speak with clarity, respect and purpose, enabling them to become effective communicators and responsible citizens.

Creating a Voice-Rich Environment

Our classrooms are voice-rich environments where every pupil is encouraged to contribute and be heard. Teachers carefully plan opportunities for structured talk, ensuring that all children can develop their vocabulary, reasoning and communication skills. Through a culture of respectful dialogue, pupils learn the value of listening, questioning and sharing ideas with confidence.

By placing spoken language at the centre of teaching and learning, we help every child find their voice and thrive both academically and personally.

Oracy Strands

Teachers use the Oracy Strand Overviews ( see documentation below) to plan oracy opportunities into daily classroom routines and teaching. They use ongoing assessment to ensure children are making expected progress and for those that are not, targeted interventions are in place to support those children.
